Our Dojo (place of training)

Our inaugural class was held on April 8, 2002.  The Hinode Shotokan Karate Club practices traditional Shotokan Karate-do, a style of martial art, based on the principles of Master Gichin Funakoshi, who is considered by many karate practitioners to be the father of modern karate.  Hinode Karate is affiliated with the Japan Karate Association of British Columbia, the International Shotokan Karate Federation, and Karate BC.

The Hinode dojo takes pride in the development of a courteous and spirited training environment.  What we teach is not a sport, but a method of using the mind, body and spirit to better ourselves in our training, as well as our daily life.  Our training environment is non-competitive, with each student working not only to improve him or herself, but to help the other students improve as well.

All karate instruction is provided by certified Karate BC instructors and Japan Karate Association (JKA) instructor trainees.  Supplemental instruction by visiting JKA Masters is offered through the Japan Karate Association of BC (ISKF) three times a year.

Examinations are offered approximately three times per year.  Students are considered for promotion based on a combination of commitment to training, work ethic and skill level - Hinode Karate is not in the business of selling belts.  All promotions are conducted by certified JKA examiners.

Our Instructors

Krister Sensei.jpg (172781 bytes) Sensei Krister Naab - Chief Instructor

Sensei began his martial arts training in 1988 with Ishinryu Karate-do in Mascott, New South Wales, a suburb of Sydney, Australia.  He trained for three years under the guidance of Sensei Robert Schaffa, and Chief Instructor of Ishinryu Australia, Sensei Tony Hails.

Upon returning to North Vancouver in 1991, the absence of an Ishinryu club caused Sensei to turn to Shotokan Karate-do where, for the next 11 years, he trained with the Vancouver Shotokan Karate Club.  It was during this period that Sensei acquired his Sandan ranking (3rd degree black belt) in Shotokan Karate-do.

A distant move by the Vancouver Shotokan Karate Club, and the opportunity to instruct the local military, reinforced Sensei's decision to open the Hinode Shotokan Karate Club, and reinstate the International Shotokan Karate Federation in North Vancouver.

Sensei Naab has experience training in different parts of the world, with many of the JKA Masters.  He is a certified Karate BC Instructor, and is actively enrolled in both the JKA Instructor Trainee Program, as well as the National Coaching Certification Program, to ensure that students receive the highest quality instruction possible.

Paige Hedayati - Vice Chief Instructor

After moving to Regina in 1982, where Sempai Paige trained with Sensei's Rick Jorgenson and Jerry Marr, Paige landed in Montreal where he trained with Sensei Yutaka Katsumata, and in 1989, graduated from McGill University.  In Vancouver, Sempai Paige continued his training in Shotokan Karate-do with the Japan Karate Association of British Columbia, ultimately settling in at the Hinode dojo.

Paige received his Sandan (3rd degree black belt) in November of 2004.  Sempai Paige is actively enrolled in the JKA Instructor Trainee Program, and is gaining a wealth of experience teaching at the Hinode dojo.
